A New York-based administrator of PPO networks has agreed to clarify a billing form for out-of-network physicians, following pressure from the AMA and several state medical societies, according to a report by American Medical News.

MultiPlan has been asking out-of-network physicians to sign an agreement for faster payment in return for accepting a specified reimbursement rate. If the physician does not sign, payment could be reduced anyway and could arrive at latest possible date allowed by state law.

MultiPlan has now revised the agreements to state they apply to a single patient visit and don’t constitute a long-term contract with the physician. It is also providing instructions for rejecting the offer or limiting the number of offers sent to the practice.
