SPR Therapeutics will soon release a new electrical stimulation device to treat shoulder pain, according to a Cleveland.com report. The device, called Smartpatch, will enter its third and final clinical trial within the next six months before applying for FDA clearance.

Smartpatch is approximately one and one-half by two inches in size and one centimeter thick. The patch attaches to the patient’s upper arm and houses the battery that powers the stimulator, while a portion of the lead wire connects the skin with the patch.

The patch is replaced regularly to prevent overuse; it can be used for up to 30 days to stimulate a peripheral nerve to relieve pain. Physicians wanting to prescribe stronger doses can provide patients with additional patches. A clinical study showed that Smartpatch provided significant pain relief, ranging from several months to several years, at the end of treatment.
