Map Tracks How Far Patients Travel to Visit Parathyroid Surgery Center

Surgeons at the Norman Parathyroid Center in Tampa, Fla., announced today they have exceeded 18,000 patients on their “parathyroid surgery map,” which documents where patients come from to undergo parathyroid surgery at the center, according to a Digital Journal report.

The Normal Parathryoid Center performs several thousand parathyroid operations for primary hyperparathyroidism every year, believed to be more than 10-fold the surgical volume in this procedure of any other institution worldwide. The center is estimated to perform more than 10 percent of the parathyroid operations in the U.S. each year and about 78 percent of the parathyroid operations performed in Florida annually.

According to Doug Politz, MD, the surgery center averages several people a week from Canada who decide to forego their national health system and seek surgeons with “more expertise,” he said.
