Study finds reverse shoulder surgery patients often return to sports — 5 points

A new study conducted by the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City looked at case data and found that athletes who underwent reverse shoulder surgery typically went back to sports, according to the HSS Newsroom.

Here are five points:

 

1. The study found patients undergoing reverse total shoulder arthroplasty had an 85 percent rate of return to one or more sporting activities approximately five months after surgery.

 

2. Some patients started new sports post-surgery.

 

3. Age (under 70 years old) was a significant predictor of a higher rate of return to sports.

 

4. Fitness sports had the highest rate of return at 81 percent followed by swimming at 66 percent.

 

5. High demand sports, such as skiing and tennis, saw lower rates of return at 28 percent and 25 percent, respectively.
