National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment proposes use of chest protectors in baseball & softball — 4 observations

The Rockford, Tenn.-based National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment is proposing young athletes wear chest protectors in baseball and softball to reduce the risk of blows to the chest that could potentially stop the heart, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Here are four observations:

 

1. The NCAA recently reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology that defibrillators should be kept close at hand in weight rooms, basketball courts, ball fields and other high risk locations.

 

2. An estimated 10 to 20 people suffer from commotio cordis, when a blow to the chest causes a cardiac arrest, every year.

 

3. Young boys under the age of 15 are most at risk for commotio cordis.

 

4. The NOCSAE is currently funding a crash-test dummy to study what protective gear works.
