Here are five things to know:
1. Dr. Wilcox played baseball at Western Michigan University for the Broncos, then moved on to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. In 2000, he was drafted by the New York Yankees.
2. After only a year, Dr. Wilcox left baseball and earned his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
3. Dr. Wilcox then completed a sports medicine fellowship in Pensacola, Fla., with James Andrews, MD.
4. Dr. Wilcox was particularly interested in the Tommy John injury.
5. Dr. Wilcox joined the Michigan State University Sports Medicine team in 2013 and works specially in baseball, but also lends help to football, and is the head physician for Lansing Catholic High School.
