Great strides have been made in recent years, according to the study, to help patients with nerve injuries see marked functional outcomes.

Once a nerve has been cut from a muscle, it has to be reinnervated within 18 months before the muscle atrophies. Performing nerve reconstruction surgery before six months after a nerve has been severed has proven successful for many patients.

The JAAOS study also provides techniques for nerve transfer and lets physicians know which have been most beneficial to patients.
