Virginia Tech researchers examined eight years of biomedical impact data on football helmets to assign one- to five-star ratings. The only publicly available helmet to receive a five-star rating is the Riddell Revolution Speed. The Schutt ION 4D, Schutt DNA Pro+, Xenith X1, Riddell Revolution and Riddell Revolution IQ received four-star ratings.

The results of the test show that newer technologies across the board are helping to reduce the concussion rate compared to older models, according to the report. The researchers performed 120 impacts on each helmet model at multiple locations and impact energies to differentiate the ratings. Additional tests were performed on three helmets of each model to determine the Summation of Tests for the Analysis of Risk value, or STAR value, which calculates the incidence of concussion for one season of collegiate level sports.

Several of the popular helmets currently in use received a one-star rating, including the Riddell VSR4, which is used by college-level and professional athletes. The Adams A2000 Pro Elite received the lowest rating, at NR, or not recommended.
