Although modern medicine is now a field steeped in higher education, this was not always the case. Medical practice was once a profession available to anyone who felt qualified.

Dr. Howland is a retired orthopedic surgeon originally from Southampton, Mass. His interest in medicine formed as a teenager during an unlicensed apprenticeship at a hospital where he prepped patients, cleaned up after surgical procedures and helped to cast broken bones.

Dr. Howland earned his medical degree at Yale University and completed his residency at Fitzsimons’s Army Medical Center in Denver, Colo. While serving in the Army, Howland spent three years working as a doctor in Europe before returning to the U.S. and settling in Redding, Calif.
