American College of Surgeons Recognizes Hand Surgeon Dr. Louis Carter for Humanitarian Work

Hand surgeon Louis L. Carter, Jr., MD, FACS, an orthopedic hand and plastic surgeon at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga, has received the Surgical Humanitarian Award from the American College of Surgeons, according to a Newswise report.

Dr. Carter has spent several years providing medical care to underserved populations, including 10 years as a missionary surgeon in Nigeria. Since then, he has made 75 trips to 26 different countries. He currently serves as a missionary plastic and hand surgeon with Serving in Mission International and Christian Medical and Dental Associations.

Dr. Carter earned his medical degree at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis and completed residencies at Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis, University of Texas Medical School and Parkland Hospital in Dallas. His additional training includes a fellowship in orthopedic surgery and urology at Methodist Hospital in Dallas.
