A panel of experts issued several drug and non-drug recommendations for patients with knee and hip osteoarthritis, including exercise and aquatic exercise for weight loss. Additional recommendations include:

•    For patients over age 75, the panel strongly recommends topical instead of oral NSAIDs.
•    For patients who are candidates for joint replacement, the panel strongly recommends prescribing opioids following the American Pain Society and American Academy of Pain Medicine guidelines.
•    The panel recommended against using chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine for knee and hip osteoarthritis patients

For the new osteoarthritis of the hand recommendations, the panel made conditional recommendations for initial non-drug treatment as well as the use of oral and topical NSAIDs.
