Kinglsey Chin, MD, founder and president of SpineFrontier, was sentenced to supervised release and ordered to pay a fine after pleading guilty to one count of making false statements to CMS.
Dr. Chin reached a plea deal in May, according to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. His guilty plea is related to charges that he told employees to report surgeon fees as consulting fees even though the physician didn’t do any consulting work.
According to a sentencing memorandum filed July 30, a judge recommended an eight-month prison sentence, a fine of $9,500, three years of supervised release and a mandatory special assessment of $100.
However, the final sentence imposed was one year of supervised release with six months of home confinement and the $9,500 fine.
Over the past couple of years Dr. Chin had other business-related allegations settled or dismissed. In June all criminal charges against him and SpineFrontier were dismissed. Federal kickback charges were dropped by the Department of Justice in January, and in December 2024, money laundering charges were dismissed. In July 2024, Dr. Chin settled a civil case with the Department of Justice over alleged False Claims Act violations.
