Here are six things to know:
1. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education granted the medical school initial accreditation for university-sponsored residency programs in general surgery and emergency medicine.
2. The medical school will run the programs with FAU College of Medicine Graduate Medical Education Consortium member teaching hospitals.
3. Boca Raton Regional Hospital; Bethesda Hospital East in Boynton Beach, Fla., Tenet HealthCare System’s Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach, Fla., St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla.; and West Boca Medical Center in Boca Raton, Fla., will host the six-year general surgery training program.
4. The three-year emergency medicine training program will be established at Bethesda Hospital East, St. Mary’s Medical Center and Delray Medical Center.
5. The general surgery program offers 45 residency slots. Subspecialties within the medical college’s surgery department include orthopedics, neurosurgery, urology, ophthalmology as well as otolaryngology/head and neck surgery.
6. The emergency medicine program will have 18 residency slots.
