Practice Management

CMS' accountable care organizations and Medicare Shared Savings Program yielded $1.29 billion in savings over the last four years, according to Med City News.

Here are five takeaways.

1. Last year, Medicare ACOs yielded $466 million in savings.

2. With 392 organizations participating in MSSP, 199 ACOs had shared savings. An additional 83 ACOs had costs lower than Medicare benchmarks, but they did not have shared savings as they did not meet the CMS minimum savings threshold.

3. Forty-nine percent of ACOs, or 190 ACOs, did not contribute to the $466 billion in savings in 2015.

4. ACOs that started earlier were more likely to qualify for shared savings. For instance, of the ACOs that started in 2012, 42 percent met the CMS threshold. Comparatively, only 21 percent of ACOs that started last year met the threshold.

5. From 2014 to 2015, ACOs participating in MSSP improved on 84 percent of reported quality measures.
