6 spine surgery firsts in May

Becker’s reported on six debut spine milestones at the regional and global scale in May from new devices and techniques.

1. HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center in Phoenix has added awake spine surgery. Surgeons with the hospital used awake spine surgery for an L4-L5 transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. They used spinal anesthesia and sedation without intubation.

2. Joseph Cox, MD, of Bienville Orthopedic Specialists in Gautier, Miss., performed the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s first endoscopic spine surgery.

3. Oceanside-based Tri-City Medical Center is the first hospital in California to use the latest Mako 4.0 robotic spine system. The hospital is also the first in San Diego County to use guidance with Co-Pilot technology from Stryker. Payam Moazzaz, MD, and Bayan Aghdasi, MD, performed the debut case.

4. Todd Alamin, MD, Empirical Spine’s co-founder, performed the first two commercial cases using the LimiFlex dynamic sagittal tether.

5. Daniel Refai, MD, of Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare, performed the world’s first continuously navigated endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion.

6. Vinod Muniswamy, MD, performed Kentucky’s first case using the MaxMoreSpine endoscopic system.
