Here are eight recent firsts in the orthopedic surgery space to know, from AI-assisted procedures to new orthopedic implants, as reported by Becker’s since June 5:

  1. Jay Pond, MD, completed the first successful use of b-ONE Ortho Corporation’s MOBIO Total Knee System utilizing the TMINI Miniature Robotic System.
  2. James Germano, MD, completed the first AI-assisted total hip replacement surgery in the U.S. using the ORTOMA platform. 
  3. Sarasota (Fla.) Memorial Hospital added the first FDA-cleared, mixed-reality navigation system for total hip replacements.
  4. Travis Scudday, MD, an orthopedic surgeon of Irvine, Calif.-based Hoag Orthopedic Institute, became the first on the West Coast to perform a total hip arthroplasty using Corin’s ApolloHipX.
  5. Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute became one of two systems in the Northeast to offer elbow joint replacements. 
  6. Maxx Orthopedics successfully completed the first U.S. cases using Invibio’s Peek-Optima femoral component. Andrew Palmisano, MD, an orthopedic hip and knee specialist with Ascentist Healthcare in Kansas City, Kan., performed the procedures.
  7. Gregory Nelson, MD, a physician at Orthopedic Associates in St. Louis, became one of the first surgeons in the region to perform an Oxford cementless partial knee replacement. 
  8. Orthopedic innovator Corin completed the first total hip arthroplasty cases using the ApolloHipX, a new application for the Apollo platform. Stefan Kreuzer, MD, founder of ASC Inov8 Surgical at Memorial City in Houston, performed the first cases with ApolloHipX.
