Hafiz Kassam, MD, director of the shoulder reconstruction division of Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, Calif., became the first surgeon in California to perform a total robotic-assisted arthroplasty using an advanced version of Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA Shoulder System.
The newest version of the system, which earned FDA clearance in May 2026, is the first robotic shoulder platform designed to assist with both anatomic and reverse shoulder replacement procedures, according to a July 28 news release from Hoag Orthopedic Institute shared with Becker’s.
Dr. Kassam is also one of the first in the world to perform a shoulder replacement with the new ROSA system.
Hoag Orthopedic Institute has 13 robotic-assisted surgical systems, providing patients with access to robotic knee, hip and shoulder procedures as well as spine surgery.
“Robotic-assisted arthroplasty is a breakthrough approach that is designed to deliver a consistent level of surgical precision and personalized planning,” Dr. Kassam said in the release. “What’s truly game-changing, however, is the ability to collect novel and impactful data as we do these surgeries to help advance the next generation of implants and techniques.”
