Dr. James Germano performs 1st hip replacement with ORTOMA system

James Germano, MD, completed the first AI-assisted total hip replacement surgery in the U.S. using the ORTOMA platform. 

The platform is an intraoperative guidance system used for total hip replacement procedures that aids in surgical precision and reduces operation duration, according to a news release shared with Becker’s

The CT scan needed to plan the implant positioning is typically sent to another location for data analytics and can take up to two weeks to receive the results. The ORTOMA can provide the data from the CT scan in four minutes. 

Dr. Germano performed the surgery May 1 on a 74-year-old patient with degenerative osteoarthritis. The procedure has helped her walk without using a cane and restored her mobility.

Dr. Germano is the chair of orthopedics at Northwell’s Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital.

The ORTOMA platform is being used as part of a pilot program at the LIJ Valley Stream Hospital for total hip replacement procedures, the release said.
