Virginia health system installs robot for joint replacement

Manassas, Va.-based Novant Health UVA Prince William Medical Center installed Stryker’s Mako System to assist with total and partial knee replacements, the Potomac Local reports.

The robot assists surgeons in two ways: They can use the planning software to create a 3D model of the joint before the surgery, and then use the robot during the surgery to ensure proper implant placement. Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge, Va., also has a surgical robot.
