Dr. Donald Ozumba charged with sexual assault of elderly patient: 6 things to know

Orthopedic surgeon Donald Ozumba, MD, was charged with aggravated sexual assault involving an elderly person, The Dallas Morning News reports.

Here are six things to know:

1. Dr. Ozumba’s criminal trial began July 24 at Collin County Courthouse in McKinney, Texas. A 73-year-old woman testified Dr. Ozumba assaulted her during a 2016 office visit.

2. If convicted, Dr. Ozumba could face up to life in prison.

3. The Texas Medical Board accused Dr. Ozumba of unprofessional conduct involving 13 patients. He is accused of sexually assaulting nine patients and engaging in sexual contact and inappropriate sexual behavior with two others. According to a January complaint filed by the medical board, Dr. Ozumba also had sexual relationships with two patients.

4. He is currently on trial for the single charge, but six other sexual assault cases involving Dr. Ozumba are pending in Collin County. Allegations from other women have also been referred to the Rockwall County (Texas) District Attorney’s Office.

5. Dr. Ozumba denied the medical board’s allegations in response to the January complaint. His medical license is suspended while the board’s complaint is pending.

6. Two other women testified July 24 that Dr. Ozumba sexually assaulted them.
