Dr. Hatef, who worked at Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, had his license permanently revoked by the state’s medical board, and he may face a maximum civil penalty of $20,000.

Mount Carmel Health System told The Columbus Dispatch that Dr. Hatef’s privileges were suspended, he is on administrative leave, and they are cooperating with the medical board’s investigation.

Between July 2024 and October 2024, Dr. Hatef operated on three patients. One patient lost about three liters of blood during surgery and died a few days after surgery, according to a letter from the State Medical Board of Ohio. Another patient died after complications from spine surgery, and a third had “hemorrhagic shock” after his procedure.

In both deaths, the state board said they were “reasonably predictable,” the report said.

Dr. Hatef is entitled to a hearing if he requests it within 30 days of suspension.
