Here are five notes:
1. Serving at Vanderbilt for about 30 years, Dr. Tulipan served as a professor of neurological surgery and chief of pediatric neurosurgery. He retired in June 2015.
2. He led innovative research on the care of infants born with open, neural tube defects, like spina bifida.
3. Dr. Tulipan performed groundbreaking surgery with the first in utero repair of spine bifida in 1997. This surgery resulted in the Management of Myelomeningocele Study, researched by Vanderbilt, the University of California San Francisco and Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania.
4. Specializing in pediatric neurosurgery, Dr. Tulipan focused on congenital defects of the nervous system, hydrocephalus, craniofacial reconstruction and surgery for spasticity.
5. Dr. Tulipan received his medical degree from John Hopkins University in Baltimore. He completed a surgery internship and neurosurgery residency at the same institution.
