The researchers used the Adolescent Pediatric Pain Tool, the Pediatric Nausea Assessment and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory as measurement tools. Fifty-five children and adolescents between the ages of seven and 20 took part in the study.
In the study, researchers administered eight individually tailored acupuncture treatments for participants. The study sessions were 60 minutes long, with 30 minutes allotted to the acupuncture intervention.
The results yielded positive results both during and after treatment sessions for pain, nausea and QoL indicators. Researchers concluded acupuncture may serve as a safe and effective adjunct treatment for chronic pain conditions in pediatric patients, yet more placebo-controlled studies are needed to learn more about acupuncture efficacy for pain treatment in children.
