Florida Board of Pharmacy works to help patients get pain medication — 5 notes

Spine

In an effort to help legitimate pain patients acquire their pain medication, the Florida Board of Pharmacy is proposing two additional training hours for Florida pharmacists, according to Click Orlando.

Here are five notes:

1. Many pharmacists are hesitant giving patients their medication after Attorney General Pam Bondi cracked down on pill mills in Florida in 2011.

2. Additionally, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency leveled multi-million dollar fines on CVS and Walgreens due to the way the companies were filling narcotic prescriptions.

3. The current state law states, "A wholesale distributor must assess orders for greater than 5,000-unit doses of any one controlled substance in any one month to determine whether the purchase is reasonable."

4. A few months ago, the DEA spoke before the Florida Board of Pharmacy, saying patients with a legitimate need should have access to their medications.

5. In 2011, the DEA claimed merely three pharmacies in the state had their DEA registrations revoked and more than 100 pharmacies had willingly surrendered them.
