Medical device company Medtronic has experienced a cybersecurity incident, with hackers breaching its network, according to an April 28 report from The HIPAA Journal

The hackers only gained access to a limited portion of Medtronic’s network, and the attack was quickly contained, according to Medtronic. The company has separate networks for its corporate IT systems, products, manufacturing and distribution operations.

At this point, Medtronic has not identified any impact on products, patient safety, customer connections, manufacturing and distribution operations or financial reporting systems.

A data theft and extortion group claimed to have stolen more than 9 million records containing personally identifiable information. The group threatened to publish the data if Medtronic did not pay a ransom by April 21.

Medtronic has since been removed from the group’s website, but Medtronic did not confirm if it paid the ransom.

The company is working to improve its system security to prevent similar incidents in the future, the report said.
