Here are five key artificial disc replacement developments from medtech companies so far this year.

1. Orthofix discontinued its M6-C and M6-L total disc replacement devices as part of its strategic focus on spinal and deformity correction.

2. Spinal Stabilization Technologies enrolled its first U.S. patient in the Investigational Device Exemption clinical trial for its PerQdisc Nucleus Replacement Device. The clinical trial will evaluate the PerQdisc device for patients suffering from degenerative disc disease.

3. Interim data on Spineart’s Baguera-C cervical disc shows the device meets the threshold for a non-inferiority claim compared to a study control.

4. Jared Ament, MD, and Amir Vokshoor, MD, of Santa Monica-based Neurosurgery & Spine Group performed the world’s first clinical case combining Premia Spine’s Tops and Centinel Spine Prodisc-L implants.

5. Centinel Spine launched new instrumentation for its prodisc L lumbar disc replacement implant. The new instruments were developed with the help of user feedback and designed to improve system ease-of-use and offer more options in the critical steps of disc replacement.
