Indianapolis-based OrthoIndy is the first practice in the state to add Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s Velys robot for partial knee replacement.

Philip Huang, DO, performed the first case with Velys in December, the practice said in a March 11 news release shared with Becker’s. The robot was launched in August.

Dr. Huang’s patient was a man who had increasing knee pain over the past few years. After having surgery with the robot, he was able to straighten his knee about a week after surgery.

“The technology allows for greater precision and accuracy during the procedure, which is a critical aspect for partial knee replacements specifically,” Dr. Huang said in the release. “As a result, patients undergoing partial knee replacements with the Velys Robotic-Assisted Solution often experience a faster recovery while also hopefully improving long term outcomes and survivorship. Barring any complications, patients go home the same day — whereas traditional procedures require them to stay in the hospital for several days.”
