Designed by Smith+Nephew, Navio aims to improve implant placement and alignment.

Surgeons can use the robot to create 3D images of a patient’s knee, collect patient-specific information, establish spatial boundaries for instruments and increase accuracy when removing damaged surfaces of the knee.

“Navio robotics assists the surgeon in the preparing [of] the bone with the precision of robotics in a freehand sculpting technique,” Maggie Gill, the hospital’s CEO, said in a Marcy 25 news release. “This technology is going to give patients less pain and swelling postoperatively than traditional total joint replacement methods.”
