Texas Tech Health El Paso will launch an orthopedic surgery residency program at University Medical Center of El Paso beginning July 1.

The five-year program will train three residents per year, aiming to increase the number of orthopedic surgeons in the region and expand access to subspecialty care. The goal is to retain graduates in El Paso and surrounding communities to address a specialist shortage, according to a Jan. 23 news release from the health system.

The program will be led by Rajiv Rajani, MD, who chairs the university’s orthopedic surgery program and will direct the new residency. Up to 15 residents are expected to be trained by 2030.

The training will be based in El Paso, centered at the region’s only level 1 trauma center. The program is distinct from an existing combined residency at Fort Bliss, Texas-based William Beaumont Army Medical Center, which will continue separately.
