Prehabilitation may reduce joint replacement surgery recovery: 5 things to know

Researchers found that pre-surgical therapy may help hip or knee replacement patients with their recovery time, according to News Medical. The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery published the report.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. The report found prehabilitation can reduce postoperative care by almost 30 percent, saving about $1,215 per patient.

 

2. The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J., implemented a prehabilitation program for joint replacement patients at any fitness level.

 

3. So far, 19 people have finished the program, exhibiting improved function, strength and flexibility.

 

4. The prehabilitation program is designed to prepare patients for intense recovery processes, which can be shorted if they are in better physical shape.

 

5. Following prehabilitation programs, patients may experience better muscle strength, better body mechanics, less pain and greater stamina.
