As private equity continues to take root in orthopedics, some surgeons remain hesitant about its influence on the industry.

A Connecticut orthopedic surgeon was fined $25,000 for operating on the wrong hip of a patient, the Hartford Courant reported Feb. 21. 

While California has over 2,000 orthopedic surgeons — the most of any state — according to 2022 data from Definitive Healthcare, 28 states in the U.S. have under 400 practicing surgeons.
