Derek Shia, MD, of Hamden-based Connecticut Orthopedics, agreed to the fine and a reprimand as part of a consent order approved by the state Medical Examining Board.

In August 2019, Dr. Shia began operating on a patient’s left hip before realizing he was supposed to treat the right hip. The error was discovered after a hip fracture was not seen on the left hip.

Dr. Shia repaired the left hip external rotators, which were detached, and finished surgery on the right hip, the report said.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
