David Altchek, MD, co-chief emeritus of sports medicine and shoulder service at New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery, is remembered for the impact of his mentorship among HSS physicians and leaders today.
Dr. Altchek died July 17 at age 68. He earned HSS’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, and was also a prominent figure within the New York Mets organization.
“My own journey with David began in 1995, when — as a wide-eyed medical student rotating through Sports Medicine — I was told he was the most talented arthroscopist I would ever observe,” Bryan Kelly, MD, president and CEO at HSS, told Becker’s. “That prophecy was confirmed during residency and fellowship, as I watched him transform daunting cases into elegant solutions. To this day, confronted with a complex problem, I still ask, ‘How would David simplify this?’ Beyond technique, he was a steadfast friend: the person who offered candid counsel at pivotal moments and who unfailingly celebrated every milestone in my career and life.”
Dr. Kelly said Dr. Altchek also had a fulfilling family life and “preached that professional success is hollow without balance and love.”
Riley Williams III, MD, echoed that and said Dr. Altchek took great pride in his family. Dr. Williams said much of his career and life path go back to Dr. Altchek’s mentorship.
“It is not hyperbole to state that my family and I owe Dr. Altchek a deep debt of gratitude for all that he facilitated on our behalf,” Dr. Williams, chief of sports medicine at HSS, said. “When I arrived at HSS in 1993, I struggled to find mentors and trusted advisers. Much to my surprise, this world renowned orthopedic surgeon took an interest in me early in my training. He was integral in my becoming an attending surgeon at HSS and ultimately becoming a professional team physician. Dr. Altchek provided me with a model for success. As an orthopedic surgeon, he excelled in all facets of clinical practice: diagnostics, surgical technique, and patient care. I was constantly in awe of the joy he took in being a doctor. He regarded caring for people as a privilege that was to be nurtured and respected. He moved with a style, grace, and energy that was captivating. I felt honored that this scion of orthopedics would support me so wholeheartedly and enthusiastically during our years together.”
Dr. Altchek is also remembered for his impact in the sports world. With the Mets he worked as head team physician and medical director.
“David and I were co-chiefs of the HSS Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service from 2005 through 2014,” Scott Rodeo, MD, said. “David was an innovative and very talented surgeon who made substantial contributions to orthopedic sports medicine. His skills and talents allowed numerous athletes across many different sports to return to the sports careers that they loved.”
