Here are five breakthroughs and firsts in orthopedic surgery, as reported by Becker’s since Nov. 10:

  1. Damion Walker, DO, a surgeon at Kansas Spine & Specialty Hospital in Wichita, completed the state’s first shoulder replacement using Stryker’s Mako SmartRobotics system.
  2. Daniel Howard, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Somers Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Group, performed the first MISHA Knee System implant in Connecticut. 
  3. Jonathan Tueting, MD, a shoulder, elbow and hand surgery specialist at Rush Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, performed the first carpometacarpal total joint arthroplasty in the U.S.
  4. Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedics performed the first U.S. case of a dual mobility total joint replacement for the thumb’s basal joint.
  5. Clifton Springs (N.Y.) Hospital and Clinic, part of Rochester Regional Health, completed its first Persona IQ Smart Knee device implant.
