Pennsylvania surgery center certified to offer outpatient knee replacement: 4 notes

The Pennsylvania Department of Health certified Elite Surgery Center in Uniontown, Pa., to perform outpatient knee replacement surgeries, according to the Herald-Standard.

Four things to know:

1. Elite Surgery Center offers orthopedic, podiatry, urology, gynecology, ophthalmology, pain management, plastic surgery and general surgery services.

2. The Department of Health granted Elite Surgery Center an exception to perform the outpatient knee replacement surgeries.

Nate Wardle, the press secretary for the Department of Health, told the Herald-Standard that “if a facility is granted an exception and adheres to the conditions of the granted exception, it will be permitted to offer those services; however, the Department still retains its authority to survey for compliance with the Health Care Facilities Act and corresponding regulations as well as revoke a granted exception.”

3. The surgery center sent their application and first set of paperwork for the certification in May 2017. The health department asked Elite Surgery Center orthopedic surgeon David Sheba, DO, to conduct a knee replacement at the center under observation, and the center was officially granted the exception December 2018.
