Independent physicians have consolidated to grow negotiation power with vendors and payers as well as share expenses and create accountable care organizations. “A group that is responsible for a significant share of the market can more easily negotiate a favorable contract than a single physician can,” wrote Dr. Collon. “However, size may not be the most important factor in these negotiations.”
He encourages “super groups” to maintain a focus on achieving good outcomes and care for patients despite new regulations and cost considerations. He said the most important factors for successful large groups are trust and transparency, and outside consultants can advise the physicians through conflict and decision-making.
