Here are six qualities that make a great physician leader:
1. Active listening. A leader should listen to patients and staff members so they know the ins and outs of their practice. Listening can help a physician better understand what is happening both internally and externally, and they can therefore devise strategies to strengthen operations.
2. Strong values. A physician leader without values will not serve as a role model for fellow staff members at a practice. Leaders with integrity will draw respect from staff.
3. Continued support. Recognize other staff members accomplishments and help them in whatever way you are able.
4. Problem solving. Utilizing this skill can help in a variety of aspects whether that is solving squabbles between staff members or opting to change a protocol that causes inefficiencies.
5. Setting specific goals, and achieve them. Physicians who talk a big game but lack follow through will not be strong physician leaders. Physicians should understand a practice’s needs and set plans in place to achieve them.
6. Being a team player. When one person does well, the entire practice does well.
