5 big orthopedic mergers in the past 5 months

In the past five months, several orthopedic practice mergers have created groups with dozens of physicians. Here are five to know:

February 2020: Banner Health agreed to acquire The Orthopedic Clinic Association, a four-location practice based in Phoenix. TOCA’s 18 orthopedic physicians and nine physician assistants will join Phoenix-based Banner Health this spring.

January 2020: Orlando (Fla.) Health acquired Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic for an undisclosed sum, making Jewett’s 25 orthopedic physicians and 13 advanced practitioners health system employees. The Orlando-based practice accommodates more than 250,000 patient visits annually.

November 2019: A merger involving three groups in Wisconsin — Appleton-based ThedaCare, Appleton-based Hand to Shoulder Center of Wisconsin and Neenah-based Neuroscience Group — was announced as part of plans to open a $144 million spine, orthopedic and pain hospital.

November 2019: Raleigh (N.C.) Orthopaedic Clinic and Cary (N.C.) Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Specialists revealed plans to merge. Together, they’ll form a 40-physician group with more than 600 employees, 11 orthopedic clinics and urgent care facilities, and two ASCs.

October 2019: Two orthopedic groups completed a merger forming Excelsior Orthopaedics. The Amherst, N.Y.-based group has seven offices in Western New York and 90 providers, which includes 22 physicians.
