Cincinnati-based Mercy Health has finalized its planned acquisition of Paducah-based Orthopedic Institute of Western Kentucky, according to a Jan. 20 report from the Times Leader.

Since orthopedic devicemaker Exactech began recalling hip, knee and ankle implants in 2021, the company has faced a wave of lawsuits from patients. Now, the FDA has issued a new warning regarding the company's shoulder joint replacement system. 

In February, Zimmer Biomet closed on the acquisition of orthobiologics company Embody for $155 million. Embody focuses on soft tissue healing, and its portfolio includes the Tapestry biointegrative implant for tendon healing and Tapestry RC implant for rotator cuff repair.

Orthopedic surgery is one of the least diverse medical specialties with regards to women, people of color and LGBTQ+ surgeons. Organizations such as Pride Ortho are working to change that.
