Health systems, device companies pour $1.6B into spine, orthopedics

From pain management device acquisitions to new orthopedic facilities, healthcare organizations and companies are continuing to pour resources into spine and orthopedic care in 2026. 

Here are 10 notable investments from the first half of 2026 totaling more than $1.6 billion, as reported by Becker’s

  1. St. Cloud, Minn.-based CentraCare opened a $194 million expansion at its Plaza campus June 29, adding more clinical space for orthopedics and sports medicine. 
  2. Rochester (N.Y.) Regional Health began construction on a $17.5 million orthopedic and neurosciences center in Canandaigua, N.Y.
  3. Northwell Health Physician Partners Orthopedics at White Plains in West Harrison, N.Y., opened, representing a $2.36 million investment. 
  4. Medtronic inked a deal to acquire SPR Therapeutics, a pain management company, for $650 million. 
  5. Boardman, Ohio-based Southwoods Health purchased an ExcelsiusGPS spine robot for $1.3 million. 
  6. Northwell Health opened the Northwell Spine Institute at Lenox Hill in New York City, a $6.3 million facility. 
  7. The UC Board of Regents approved a $298.2 million project from UCLA Health to convert a Los Angeles-area building into an office building including a sports medicine facility and ASC.
  8. Saginaw, Mich.-based Covenant HealthCare broke ground on a $25 million orthopedic facility to expand musculoskeletal care in the region.
  9. NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem in New York City opened a $10 million orthopedic and podiatry clinic.
  10. Smith+Nephew completed its acquisition of Integrity Orthopaedics, adding the FDA-cleared Tendon Seam rotator cuff repair system to its shoulder portfolio. The transaction is worth up to $450 million.
