The study involved 44 patients receiving PEEK implant with plasma-sprayed titanium coating during single or multi-level ALIF. Researchers analyzed the clinical efficacy as well as the rate of arthrodesis.
International Journal of Spine Surgery published the paper.
Here are five observations:
1. The study revealed a 96 percent success rate of patients “achieving solid arthrodesis at an average of 7.3 ± 2.3 months.”
2. Researchers found significant improvement in patients’ visual analog scale low back pain and leg pain scores at nine months post-operation.
3. Additionally, the researchers did not find any significant difference in VAS low back or leg pain improvement between patients when analyzed by “gender, age, tobacco use, comorbidities, prior surgery, fusion construct length, use of supplemental posterior instrumentation, BMI or diagnosis.”
4. The study authors did not find any implant subsidence.
5. The study authors concluded adding a “PTC coating to a zero-profile PEEK lumbar interbody spacer facilitates rapid and stable fixation at the bone-implant interface.”
