Here are five things to know:
1. UW petitioned to block the unionization, arguing residents and fellows are students instead of employees, but the Public Employment Relations Commission sided with residents and fellows.
2. UW and the union negotiated for 22 months before settling on an agreement that was passed among the residents in October. The first contract covers 1,350 residents and fellows.
3. The contract went into effect this past Tuesday and will run through June 30, 2019.
4. Last year, residents and fellows received $53,268 to $69,792 in annual salary, which UW felt was competitive. The new contract increases wages 3 percent in 2016 and every year through 2018. Each resident will receive a ratification payment between $455 and $1,430 depending on where they are in training.
5. Additional benefits negotiated include up to 12 weeks of paid leave during the appointment and $50,000 each year to support qualifying residents who need childcare. There is also an annual travel allowance of $750 to support transportation costs.
