Here are eight ways to improve patient interactions and help them participate in their own care, thereby avoiding lawsuits, according to the report:

1. Put in place a tracking system for test results.
2. Don’t allow the patient to sign a consent form if he or she still has questions for the doctor.
3. Avoid asking the patient yes-or-no questions.
4. Perform periodic audits of your receptionists’ communications and phone calls with patients.
5. Assign the responsibility of “waiting room hospitality” to individual staff members.
6. Give patient satisfaction surveys, asking about every aspect of their appointment and visit.
7. Make phone interactions more pleasant.
8. Pay attention to the “challenging patient.”
