2 Key Precautions Physicians Can Take to Avoid Data Security Breaches

HIPAA compliance and protecting patients’ financial data is an ongoing issue for physician practices, according to a Physicians Practice report. 1. Cyber liability insurance. Cyber liability policies protect against a variety of issues such as theft of medical records and the intentional misuse of patient data by employees.

2. Background checks and proper employee credentialing. If a practice contracts with third-party medical billing firms, its HIPAA security procedures should involve a review of the entire chain of custody that handles patient records, including questions about any third-party company’s background screening practices, according to Mr. Devji.
