Dr. Boiardo and his time are donating their time while the rest of the cost is covered by donations or absorbed by the 357-bed hospital. The full cost of a replacement is about $33,000 to $46,000, including the surgery and a three-day hospital stay.

The program, called Operation Walk, has covered 12 patients since it started in January.
