Dr. Macaulay recommends that patients, especially those with a history of fragility and fractures, go through regular check-up so that appropriate treatment can be administered. In a 2010 interview with HospiMedica International, he talked about “Own the Bone”, a web-based quality-improvement registry developed by the American Orthopaedic Association to give patients nutrition counseling and education, activity recommendations and lifestyle coaching.
“Research has shown that patients who have had a fragility fracture are four times more likely to experience another fracture than those who have never had a fracture. The Own the Bone program will help us ensure that our patients with fragility fractures are screened and appropriately treated for osteoporosis,” Dr. Macaulay said.
Dr. Macaulay graduated from Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed a fellowship in hip and knee replacement. He participates in orthopedics on the academic as well as the clinical side by teaching at Columbia University and continuing to research and solve adult reconstructive problems. He describes himself as a conservative physician who uses surgery as “the last resort.”
Dr. Macaulay has been named to a list of New York’s Best Doctors in 2009 and has been featured on the Becker’s Orthopedic & Spine Review list of 25 of the best knee surgeons in the United States.
