Uday Kumar, MD, director of strategy for biodesign and the founder of medtech start-ups, interviewed Mr. Mahoney.
Here are five insights:
1. Mr. Mahoney advised to go outside of your comfort zone. Throughout his career, he learned when “you take a tough assignment and are successful, you become more willing to take another tough assignment.”
2. He noted a strong leadership style that encourages “collaboration and authentic, open communication.”
3. When it comes to start-ups Mr. Mahoney emphasized that “every dollar counts,” and entrepreneurs should take calculated risks.
4. Although it would be nice to always move forward with a solid consensus, Mr. Mahoney said most of the time you’ll be in a “6-4” situation. He advised to “try to push the ball forward more quickly.”
5. Within the healthcare realm, Mr. Mahoney sees the interplay between sensor technology, big data and diagnostics will bring innovation.
