Regenerative medicine company Histogenics, based in Waltham, Mass., received a 2017 New England Innovation award sponsored by Waltham-based Smaller Business Association of New England.

More than 60 judges on SBANE's panel sifted through 200 organizations to name 20 finalists and eight winners. The New England Innovation Awards honored Histogenics as a top local company for product innovation and research in cartilage repair. SBANE seeks to recognize innovative companies that deliver proven value to customers.

"The recognition by the judges of the valuable work our local employees are doing to provide patient and physicians better alternatives to repair cartilage defects is especially rewarding," said President and CEO of Histogenics Adam Gridley.

The company's NeoCart, designed to treat knee cartilage defects, is in Phase III clinical trials.
