An orthopedic surgeon at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago has developed a less invasive, surgical treatment for bunions, according to a press release from the organization.

The Mini TightRope procedure, co-developed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. George Holmes, head of the foot and ankle program at Rush and assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Rush University, straightens bunions without cutting bone.

During the procedure, fiberwire is used to bind together the first and second metatarsals. This pulls the first metatarsal into proper alignment.

Pain bunions have traditionally required an osteotomy bunionectomy in the first metatarsal to correct the deformity.
