Here are five things to know:
1. The Santa Monica ACL Prevention Program was created by Bert Mendelbaum, MD, of Santa Monica Sports Medicine in California.
2. Division I female soccer players who participated in the program showed a 60 percent reduction rate of ACL injuries, according to studies conducted in 2001 and 2005.
3. Roughly 200,000 ACL injuries occur per year in the U.S., with the majority occurring in youth athletes participating in a number of sports.
4. Dr. Grossfeld’s program is comprised of 20 to 25 minutes of exercise, which should be done as a warm up two to three times a week in order to prevent ACL injuries and recover if one is hoping to avoid a second injury.
5. Dr. Grossfeld reports that, based on a recent case study, athletes who do the program’s exercises are five times less likely to incur injuries than those who do not.
